I am so sad that to hear that Marianne collapsed onstage in Milan and will be recuperating from exhaustion for 3 months. I hope all is well for her and that we will get to see her stateside in the spring. Meanwhile, I can hardly wait to get my hands on her new CD "BEFORE THE POISON"; Marianne collaborating with PJ Harvey!! May I die now in eternal ecstasy. Here are the liner notes. I nearly fell over when I read the write up. This is EXACTLY how I wish to write!! What I strive for and don't quite reach! Oh where oh where is that birthday boy from the Dresden Dolls Providence gig? Your picture and that magic moment Amanda kissed you onstage are included in this new page of more photos from Providence. Another amazing show was the return of the The Black Keys to the Paradise. I never cease to amaze at how raw, powerful and overwhelming this Ohio duo is. My Gawd, what guitar playing, the gut wrenching kind one never thought to hear in this day and age. And the interchange between between drum and guitar fills the room with a synergized electrical overload that knocks you flat. Wow. And again I say wow!!

I think it's safe to say that Herrell's Ice Cream has never seen anything like last Thursday night. The Maestro of Noise, Bill T Miller, raised a few eyebrows as early as 5:00 clock when he arrived 3 hours early with stacks of blue containers. What Oh What is gonna pop out? Why, multitudinous circuit bent toyz of course. Just call him Santa Noise. And it takes a loooooooooong time to wire all that stuff up. Plus of course Bill wanted to make sure that he was ready to mike up his various duet partners. What, you thought Bono singing with Frank Sinatra was the most of the mostest. I beg to differ. O Blue Eyes and the Rock Saviour of the Universe have got nothing on BTM's duets. And of course at some time in the near future you can hear for yourself if you missed the fun cuz Bill but of course recorded to DAT. Was sooo glad this Dresden Dolls show fell on a weekend night. I actually had to start back to teaching this past week and that means both a 5:10 AM wake-up call and an end to most mid-week mayhem. Alas! Alas! Alas! Goodbye to a great summer! More on this show and picks later, but for right now here's a short 4 minute video I shot. Thanks again to Bill for doing such a great job so quickly editing this footage and creating the webpage.

Back from my Texas homeland excursion. Couldn't believe that the temps stayed in the 80's. What? No 3 weeks of 104 temps? Iuppiter be praised. Was very excited upon my return to catch the Dresden Dolls in their network debut on the Jimmy Kimmel show. Hope others got to see this. Amanda was a bit hoarse, but otherwise it went very well. While I was away Bill T Miller, my webmeister, sorted through my numerous Dresden Dolls shots and created a new page for me. MAXIMAS GRATIAS TIBI, BILL!!! Check out these newly posted shots!!! Lots of interesting listening experiences in and around Boston the past couple of weeks. Donna Parker is hosting a great noise night at the Midway in JP on Tuesdays. One of the nice things about the summer is since I don't have to get up a 5:00 AM to get ready to enlighten the youth of Boston, I can actually go to these shows during the week and stay for the entire event. Dig these Wipers lyrics. Never really sure if Roger is singing them as is or altering them in some interesting way--the performance of the piece is so hypnotically powerful. To be sure he certainly shouts "you" and"youth of america" plenty, but as for the rest? I can't imagine they aren't going to bring the house down with this one at Avalon. It's sooooo tailor made for this situation. Hey, maybe Clint will get his chronicle crew out to document this Sunday hoopla and we members of the public can have some idea about this event.

Bill also added some other shots of mine to the "more" page. When I was camped out in Manhatten this past weekend I took quite a few shots of ground zero from my 16th floor hotel room. As anyone who has ever price-lined.com a hotel room in NY knows, The Millenium Hilton is best deal around for a 4 star hotel. The pricing no doubt having something to so with both its proximity to ground zero and way downtown location. Bill did an inspired piece of photo shopping to one of these shots. Check it out at

Now I wait for my point and shoot siren shots to arrive at the CVS photo shop. Since I really didn't know what would happen when I got to siren fest, I took some disposable cameras and left my good camera in the hotel room. Needless to say, I think the results might be too painful to contemplate so I'm not sure if I'll ever post any photos from that amazing day. But I am finally able to start writing about it and will post within a couple of days, photos or no photos.

Straight from LAX, at least that's what I hear. But if Burma's gear just arrived at Logan this morning, having been mistakenly shipped from Europe to the left coast, and was rushed to New Haven, then what the hey did they use on Martha's Vineyard last weekend? No doubt I've missed/misunderstood something here. But now I'm thinking what a way cool t-shirt that stage plot diagram would make. First time I've seen one of those actually taped down within my view. Now do a 180: this inner space is lofty/open, laced with velvet ropes to keep the boozers at bay. Haven't seen a corral like this since EMP. Transgressors are no doubt tossed into that more than ample cavernous mouthed green dumpster. Talk about curb appeal. Was so glad to make it pass the one-headed cerberus toad gatekeeper. This murky underworld advertises its sense of self with remnants of bands gone by. But what's this? Orphic sounds? um, Orpheus has morphed into a three-bodied, no make that four, no make that three-bodied sorcerer. For a moment there is some sort of sax sound. ahhhhh, and their magic has brought forth good stage lights! Hope, there is hope after all for some show shots that need not feed the trash bin.

Jimmy (mob tour manager) tapes down the set list on the stage. Two full columns come into view. Jimmy says to the eager fans who eye this paper like the long lost lover they thought never to embrace: "There are TWO sets. Please don't take this until the end." I'm really hyped up now knowing that Burma is once again spoiling us with more MOB in one evening than one could ever have dreamed of in a life time only two short years ago. Their energy is immense: their playing is tight and assured. Their European stint seems to have revved them up rather than sapped their reserves. Clint steers the evening into unique waters right from the start when, praising Bob Weston in his absence, he notes that this evening is a return to primal Burma - a three man line-up. Speaking of three's a charm: The Wipers started it, the Melvins picked it up, and Burma has blasted it into the new millenium.

Once again MOB channels a raw urgent energy in this time of pungent politics. Brilliant musical archaeology coupled with a prescient/contemporary anthemic song structure make their choice and delivery of "YOA" a slamming call to the ballot box to oust that "Shrub." Yeah, "Youth of America... It is time we rectify this... NOW, NOW, NOW."

ROGER MILLER with Club d'Elf at the MFA July 14th

Great way to spend my birthday. In between his Burma appearances this week, Roger traded in his guitar for keyboards/samples. Part of the Museum of Fine Arts' concerts in the courtyard, last night the weather brought the music indoors. No matter, it was an excellent musical adventure. Roger's improvisational mind at work finds a great avenue for expression in bassist Mike Rivard's collective of funky jazz hip hopped Moroccan players. At one point the power blew on Roger's side of the stage and he lost all his samples. I would never have known this if Roger hadn't told me how he scrambled to upload replacements. Included in these photos by Bill T Miller is a great view of Roger's equipment. This all made me hunger for some Binary System.

The football game projected on one wall of the foyer provides an unexpected back drop for the merch table. Nothing like touring during playoffs! The show is one longer set---as I hear all the gigs have been on this tour. Another blistering Burma performance with a particularly boiling version of The Wipers "Youth of America." As always the Burmen are more than gracious when they catch sight of me. Special thanks to Jimmy Conley for circling the stage until he locates a pass that prevents my forced ejection. Fav moment: the fan after the show who approaches Peter for an autograph. His hands and arms are visibly shaking so hard that he appears about to become unhinged at the joints. Truly touching to see such a palpable display of well earned respect.

Burma blasts the "Brummies" and I fall in love with "The Floozie in the Jacuzzi"--the local nickname (or at least I'm told) for the central fountain. Huh? What's this? Roger and Clint switch places. Are they bored with looking at one another from the same angle? Have they lost all sense of direction after endless days/hours in a van? Or does Peter simply need a slight change of scenery? No...no...no. Actually this switch has to do with Roger's
usual side of the stage having a lower ceiling and the staff thinking that his amp would therefore bounce back
too loudly on him. Speaking of Roger, nice to hear his new tune "13" again. The song gains even more strength with every performance.

It's a cliche, but the British countryside is gorgeous. The train ride from Birmingham to Glasgow 'tis amazing and relaxing. I was more than ready to get rocked over and rolled on. Between Burma and the Glasgow crowd I got more than I could have imagined. WOW! These fans not only sang out during tunes like "Revolver" but numerous Glaswegians mouthed most the lyrics to the new "OnOffOn" songs as well. And finally some
drunken pseudo heckling...

Vinyl here! Vinyl there! Vinyl, Vinyl everywhere! More record stores stocked with vinyl than imaginable. And herein is also contained the answer to solvency for America's used record stores----The Vinyl Cafe. Think a funky and definitely louder variation of a bookstore cafe. Night and Day is an interesting gallery like venue. A large movie screen hangs as a stage curtain with cult movie projections etc. before/between the sets. Bob Weston sits transfixed by his laptop. He wins for largest gig triangulation. Between Glasgow and Manchester he flew to Spain to play a 4:00 AM castle gig with Shellac---geeze!

There's a fun Mancusian crowd; very into it. I love that Burma jump starts the set with "Secrets"--that tune's shift moment always causes me bodily displacement. Dig the guy who shouts out for "Outlaw". Good luck, Dude. I've been begging for "New Nails" for 2 years now. 2 YEARS?? Totally INEXPLICABLE!

Always a pleasure to hear music that has some real intensity of worth. Am so glad that Nottingham's own were opening for Burma and I got the chance to experience some musicians who definitely hold their own on the stage and then some. Really love the crazed moments when Seachange flails about wildly on the stage. In Glasgow there was intermittent smoke and two people video taping the band. I'll be very excited to see the results! Also keep an eye out in the MOB photos for Seachange's violinist Jo Woodnutt. She joined Burma on stage for "Wounded World" and "Prepared."
